Introducing SafeIntake: One Scanner. Five Safety Layers.

Why we built a barcode scanner that goes beyond nutrition facts and what's coming next for food, pets, home, and beauty.

Introducing SafeIntake: One Scanner. Five Safety Layers.

Most food apps tell you how many calories are in something. That’s useful. But for the 32 million Europeans living with food allergies, it misses the point entirely.

When you’re coeliac, the question isn’t “how many calories does this have?” It’s “will this make me sick?”

SafeIntake was built to answer that question clearly, instantly, and without requiring you to become a food scientist to understand the result.

One Safety Engine. Five Products.

The core of SafeIntake is a detection engine that does three things:

  1. Reads structured allergen tags: the declared allergens in Open Food Facts
  2. Checks trace warnings: the “may contain” and cross-contamination notes
  3. Parses ingredient text: deep keyword matching against allergen dictionaries, even when labelling is inconsistent

Every product you scan returns one of three verdicts: SAFE, CAUTION, or UNSAFE, tailored to your personal profile.

We started with food because that’s where the need is most immediate. But the same engine applies everywhere people interact with labelled products.

What’s Coming

SafeIntake Food live now. Scan any food barcode for 13 allergens, sugar, carbs, and 40+ flagged additives. Free. No account needed.

SafeIntake Pets coming soon. The same scanning technology applied to pet food and treats. Because cats and dogs can’t read labels and some human foods are genuinely poisonous to them.

SafeIntake House coming soon. Household cleaning products, detergents, and sprays scanned for toxic chemicals, child hazards, and eco-impact.

SafeIntake Beauty coming soon. Cosmetics and personal care scanned for parabens, phthalates, hormone disruptors, and EU-restricted ingredients.

Our Principles

We built SafeIntake with three non-negotiables:

No account, no tracking. Your dietary profile stays on your device. We don’t see it. We don’t want it.

Source-cited verdicts. Every threshold we use traces to published guidance: WHO, EFSA, IARC, Nutri-Score, NOVA. We don’t invent safety standards.

Plain language. SAFE, CAUTION, UNSAFE. Not a table of numbers that requires a nutritional science degree to interpret.

The Data Behind the App

SafeIntake is powered by Open Food Facts and the Open * Facts family of databases, the community-maintained, open-access product databases that underpin most food-scanning apps worldwide. Over 3 million products. Updated daily by contributors around the world.

We contribute back, and we encourage users to report gaps.

We’re just getting started. Follow the blog for allergen guides, ingredient deep-dives, and updates on each new app as it launches.
